There were Saturdays where you could feel it coming. True freshman corner, football in the air, and every Tennessee fan holding their breath. Opposing quarterbacks had a quick, simple read. Look for the freshman in one on one coverage. If that’s what you see, send it. Georgia went after him over and over. Other teams sniffed it out too. Big plays happened. Momentum swung. Early in the season it looked like the secondary had a clear weak point wearing number 4.
That’s the ugly part of throwing a freshman into the SEC fire in a position that operates outside the hashes. Nowhere to hide while you grow up. Redmond got thrown in before he was ready and was tested often. Some of those tests he failed in real time. The kind of plays that make the whole stadium go quiet for a second.
But here’s the part that matters. He never stopped fighting.
By the end of the year he had 43 tackles, three interceptions, and 11 passes defended. He started most of the season. He earned recognition as one of the better true freshmen in the SEC. The tape wasn’t always pretty, but the fight was there. A lot of young corners shrink after they get cooked. Redmond kept competing. As a freshman he wasn’t miles behind. Just a step. SEC quarterbacks will punish you for that step. With that punishment can come accelerated growth if you have the right mindset to not make the same mistake twice. Coach Heupel loves to preach just that. Redmond has that mindset and he looked like a more comfortable, complete corner as the year moved along.
That will mean everything this season.
Last year Redmond was competing and surviving. 2026 will show he belongs as one of the premier corners in the SEC. He will be stronger and faster with the addition of strength coach Derek Owings. He’s seen the speed of SEC receivers. Plus, he’s walking into a defense that will be more structured under Jim Knowles.
Tennessee doesn’t need him to be perfect. They need him to be reliable. Confident enough that quarterbacks think twice before testing him over and over. It will be enough for a secondary that’s desperately looking for playmakers. The old saying is pressure creates diamonds.
Look for Ty Redmond to be the crown jewel of the secondary in 2026.
