I am not calling this offense fixed. I am calling it alive enough to matter.
George MacIntyre getting the ball out and hitting the easy throws is the whole bet on that side of the ball. That is what showed up when he came in against Auburn. Not a hero throw every series. The slant, the checkdown, the ball gone before the rush finishes the picture. If he does that in Fayetteville, this offense moves better than it has the last two weeks. Chains move. Drives do not die on a hold and a sack. I do not think that suddenly means a lot more trips to the end zone than we have been getting. It means the staff can script a score or two early and then stop asking the quarterback to win the game.
DeSean Bishop is still the punch. He runs well when there is a crease, and the line in front of him is finally trending the right way after both guard spots got replaced. Not fixed. Better than the group that could not block Texas. Arkansas has been gashed on the ground by the two league teams that bothered to run it at them. Georgia and Texas A&M both went over 230. I do not see them lining up and stopping 12 personnel. A tight end on the edge, Bishop pressing the line, and a quarterback who is not holding it. That is the look. If the fit busts outside the way Ron Roberts already said it has been busting, this gets simple.
The defense is still the reason I trust the result. I have not seen Arkansas move the ball in a straight line against anybody worth lining up against. KJ Jackson can throw it if the picture stays clean. Chris Marshall is a real target. Neither of those things has produced a consistent drive against a front that gets home. This Tennessee defense plays sticky, it hits the quarterback, and it has the linebackers to clean up the edge Arkansas keeps losing. If the Vols get a couple of takeaways, the game is not a track meet. It is control. Tennessee with the ball, the clock moving, Arkansas chasing.
That is the script I think they want. An early touchdown or two, then cruise. Trust the defense. Make the game as short as it can be. Do not get cute in the second half because the first half worked. MacIntyre does not need 35 throws. Bishop does not need 40 carries. They need the lead and a quarterback who will take the open guy.
The pause is the building. Tennessee’s record in Fayetteville is ugly, and it has been ugly for a long time. I looked for a football reason Arkansas keeps this close anyway. I do not have one. Not their run game. Not their line. Not a defense that has given up explosive runs to every real opponent. The only path is Tennessee turning it over in bunches and spotting them a short field. Absent that, the home field is noise.
Tennessee scripts a nice start, Bishop runs behind a line that is no longer the worst thing on the field, and the defense spends the afternoon taking the air out of it. Arkansas hangs around only if the Vols hand them the ball. They will not.
Tennessee 30, Arkansas 16.
