Game Of Inches: Arkansas

Arkansas is 2-3, and the two wins are North Alabama and Tulsa. Utah beat them 43-10. Georgia beat them 45-17. Texas A&M beat them 34-7. They are scoring 19.8 points a game. They are last in the country in rushing at 71.6 yards a game. The line has them as a 13.5 point underdog in their own stadium, with Tennessee around minus 550 on the moneyline. That part is not complicated.

The complicated part is where the game is.

Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Saturday on the SEC Network. Tennessee has not won in Fayetteville since 2001. The last trip there, in 2024, was a loss. The last meeting, last October, was Tennessee 34, Arkansas 31. A three point game against a team that was not good. That is the whole inch in this one. Not their roster. The chance to hang around long enough to believe the old script is back.

Ryan Silverfield is in year one. KJ Jackson is the quarterback, a junior with 1,038 passing yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. Chris Marshall is the one receiver who has actually produced, 517 yards. The run game is Sutton Smith and not much else. This offense does not have a second punch if the first one gets hit. Their defense has been the less embarrassing side, and it still gave up 45 to Georgia and 34 to A&M. There is no version of this Arkansas team that wins a shootout with a good Tennessee half.

They can win a slow one. That is the only path.

If Tennessee scores on the first drive and gets a stop, the building gets quiet and the dog starts playing like a dog. If it is 7-3 or 10-7 at the half, Fayetteville remembers 2001 and last October, and a team that has been blown out by every real opponent this year suddenly thinks it has a puncher’s chance. Underdogs do not need to be good to make the favorite uncomfortable. They need the scoreboard to lie for 30 minutes.

That is on Tennessee, and it is the part this team has not been consistent about. Against Texas the offense spent the day stuck and the game stayed a field goal either way. Against Auburn it was 7-3 at the half with the wrong quarterback in, and the thing only turned when the run game got loose and the defense kept the door shut. Arkansas is not Texas. Arkansas is not even Auburn. A patched line and a quarterback who gets the ball out should be enough to put this one out of reach by the third quarter. George MacIntyre is starting. DeSean Bishop just ran for 220. The defense is giving up 15.2 points a game. None of that matters if the Vols spend the first half checking the score.

The inch is the margin at halftime. Get it to two scores before the crowd decides this is 2024 again. Do that and Arkansas is what the tape says, a first year staff with no run game and two wins over teams that do not belong in this conversation. Fail to do it and a 13.5 point favorite is in a fistfight in a stadium it has not left with a win in 25 years.

Do not let them hang around. Do not let them believe. The roster says this should not be close. The building is the only thing that can make it close. Tennessee has to take that away before the second half starts.
